"Malaysian
contemporary Chinese brush painters have a strong traditional Chinese culture
and a broad artistic view of their own. They persevere in their quest for fine
art. They express their personal identities and show the faces of times with
their different art form. I'm glad that these talented Malaysian artists are
enlightening other artists in main land China and other parts of Asia. Their
creativity and courage is also a stimulator and a driving force."
- Professor Shao Da Zhen, Central Art College, Beijing, China.
The
history of fine art development in Malaysia is rather short. However, Malaysia
is located at a thriving crossroads of a major shipping trade route where
traders from East and West brought with them more than their exotic products and
expertise. Its populace mostly made up of immigrants from different cultures.
Amongst them, the Malays, Chinese and Indians are the major races. Each of these
races also brought along with them their own culture, language, religion, and
custom, and over the years these cultural elements have flourished in this
beautiful “homeland” of theirs.
Since
the early Malacca trading days and subsequently the British colonial days,
Malaysia has also been subjected to the strong influence of the Western culture.
This coupled with the freedom in religion believes and people's own cultural
developments, it is inevitable that the fusion of Eastern and Western culture
thus brought about a unique form of Malaysian art.
